The Fast and Easy Way to Install Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Peel and stick wallpaper is a hassle-free and beautiful option to other types of papers that require glue to hang. They are fast and easy to install and the removal process is even easier. Peel and stick wallpaper is also known as self-adhesive wallpaper or removable wallpaper and however you want to say it, this type of paper is the best way to give your rooms an aesthetic boost.

Peel and stick wallpaper is available in many different colours and patterns and some even come with a variety of textures. While they are marketed as wallpaper, they can be used for many different types of projects including on furniture, stair risers and much more. If you are interested in hanging up some new wallpaper and want to know how to do it in the easiest way, follow the guidelines below.

Before getting started, however, it's important to note that hanging peel and stick wallpaper is a lot easier when done by two people instead of just one. While it is possible to do it by yourself, it's much easier with two people. As you are working one person can hold up the strip of wallpaper and smooth it while the other person peels off the backing and makes sure that the paper is following a straight line.

How to Hang Removable Wallpaper

Step 1 - Place Your Order for Removable Wallpaper
The first thing you'll need to do is place an order for removable wallpaper and this starts by determining how much you will require for your project. You'll need to take careful measurements of the height and width of the walls that you need covered in order to figure out just how many rolls will be required. Use a tape measure to take the height and width measurements and then multiply these amounts to get the total area.

It's always a good idea to order a bit more than what you have calculated just in case you need extra. If your dog happens to take a bite out of the paper or you happen to damage a small part of it by mistake, you'll have the extra removable wallpaper close by to use as a backup.

Step 2 - Preparing the Surface for Self–Adhesive Wallpaper

Once you have received your order for self-adhesive wallpaper you'll need to prepare the walls as your second step. Move any furniture or belongings away from the wall so that you have a lot of room to navigate around them. Turn off the power to the room and carefully remove any socket covers and faceplates. Lightly wash the wall that you are going to be doing first with a cloth or a sponge to remove any dust and dirt from it. Wait until the wall is completely dry before moving onto the next step.

Step 3 - Prepare a Guide for the Placement of the Wallpaper

Measure out the width of your removable wallpaper and use a pencil to mark out the width using a level and something with a straight edge such as a long meter stick. Draw a line from the baseboard to the ceiling following the marks. This will help you get the first strip of peel and stick wallpaper applied in a straight line.

Step 4 - Start Applying the Removable Wallpaper

Peel off approximately 12 inches of the backing and then line up the wallpaper according to the lines you have drawn on the wall. Begin from the ceiling moving downwards while pressing and smoothing the removable wallpaper against the wall. As you make your way down you'll be peeling off more of the backing. As you do this you'll need to run a smoothing tool made of plastic downwards along the wallpaper in long, smooth strokes. This is how the air bubbles are removed. Once you reach the bottom you can use a utility knife to remove any of the excess wallpaper that reaches beyond the baseboard.

Step 5 - Match the Patterns

When it's time to put up your next piece of peel and stick wallpaper you'll need to make sure that you match up the patterns from side to side on one piece of wallpaper to the next. This is what will give the entire wall a seamless look. Match up the wallpaper strips so that they are touching one another but not overlapping. You'll need to run the tool for smoothing on the second piece of wallpaper just as you did with the first one. Repeat this process until the entire wall is covered.

Step 6 - Working around Outlets and Windows

When you need to work around a window, a door frame or an outlet, allow the self-adhesive wallpaper to overlap it when first placing it down. Once the wallpaper has been placed down use a utility knife to trim along the obstacle and then remove any excess wallpaper. Make sure that the power is still off when using a utility knife to cut along the opening. It's okay if the edges look rough since the switch plates or outlet covers will cover up these rough spots. You'll want to cut carefully, however, along a door or window frame since the peel and stick wallpaper will be seen along the sides.

Step 7 - Check for Any Remaining Air Bubbles

If you discover any air bubbles once you have finished the wall, don't despair. Using a small pin, prick a hole in the bubble to release the air. Press down on the bubble to smooth it out. While it may appear as though it is very noticeable when you're standing up close and looking right at it, when you step away from the wall you won't even notice that these air bubbles were once there.
